Agribusiness plays a vital role in the MSME sector, contributing approximately 25% to the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employing over 50% of MSMEs. Despite its importance, the sector faces significant challenges, including inadequate storage facilities, post-harvest losses, and limited value addition, all of which negatively impact farmers’ livelihoods and hinder the sector’s growth.
To address these issues, MSEA has constructed cold storage facilities in Kisii, Meru, and Nyandarua counties. These facilities are designed to sustainably curb post-harvest losses and increase the income of smallholder farmers and rural entrepreneurs involved in the production, storage, and marketing of potatoes and other vegetables.

In a recent consultative meeting, MSEA Board Chairman Mr. James Mureu and CEO Mr. Henry Rithaa met with a delegation from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Warehouse Receipt Council (WRC), led by Taneem Ahad and Lucy Komen, respectively. The focus of the discussion was the operationalization of these cold storage facilities.
This meeting is part of a series of broader discussions aimed at developing an action plan for the facilities’ operations, sustainability, commercialization, and capacity building for MSMEs, as well as enhancing the value addition of agricultural produce.
The cold storage facilities are expected to significantly reduce post-harvest losses during periods of high productivity, creating sustainable solutions for MSMEs in the agricultural sector and contributing to the achievement of food security.
